It is not known yet by everybody that the new powered bikes, electric bikes, are nothing like their predecessors the moped or scooter. How electric bikes work lately are a far cry from the petrol engines of the moped and scooter and so they are also a far cry from the size of a moped or scooter and as an added bonus, do not make the loud noises of a moped or scooter. The modern electric bike has a motor, a battery and a control, not of which are heavy or bulky and in fact their combined weight is only 20 pounds. Also as they are relatively small each of these three components is fitted discreetly onto the bike, not changing its general appearance at all. This means that when an electric bike is not in use, it is as manoeuvrable and convenient to store as a traditional bike. It also means that when an electric bike is in use, it is very convenient and versatile as the motor can be used in three different modes. In the pedal only mode, the electric bike is in fact a regular bike that needs pedal power to move. In the pedal assist mode, although a lot of the bike’s movement is dependent on pedalling, as the motor engages whenever the pedals are used, pedalling is a lot easier even when facing uphill climbs or strong winds. When operating in the motor only mode, the pedals become obsolete as all the power is provided by the electric motor which is on continuously. Obviously how far the bike can travel without the battery needing to be recharged will depend on which mode the motor is used in but, with a 250 watt motor in motor only mode, a battery may go as far as 20 miles before needing to be recharged. In the pedal assist mode though, that same battery may go as far as 40 miles before it needs recharging. Although there are larger motors available to have on an electric bike, as big as 1000 watts, the 250 watt motor is becoming the most popular size and that is probably because it can provide a speed of 20 MPH in motor only mode and although the larger motors may be able to provide faster speeds, they will also require the battery to be charged more frequently. Powered by their battery, these electric bike motors work in several ways, depending on where they are located on the bike. When the motor is fitted to the hub of the front wheel, the motor turns that wheel providing movement o the bike. When the motor is fitted to the hub of the rear wheel, in a similar way, the motor turns that wheel to provide movement. Neither of these locations though allows the motor to make use of any ears in the drive chain but, a third location does. The motor can also be fitted in the middle of the bike where it connects directly to the drive chain and propels the bike in the same manner as the pedals do, making full use of any gears.
